The Hawaiian flag has eight stripes of red, blue, and white to represent the eight main islands. Great Britain's flag is in the upper left corner to honor Hawaii's friendship with the British. Hawaii's flag has a combination of the strips on the United States flag and the Union Jack of Great Britain. It is said to have pleased the merchant shippers of both nations.

Aloha State
Hawaii became a state on August 21, 1959, becoming the 50th state in the United States. It is the Aloha State because it is the most common word in the Hawaiian language. Aloha means many things like hello, welcome, best wishes, love, and even goodbye. Hawaiians are very friendly and like to greet everyone with a smile.
